Palm Beach Atlantic (Day 2)

Time to get down to business. The FELC students were introduced to several projects throughout the day!
  1. Company Business Plan & Marketing Strategies: Every company needs a business plan! It's the road map to success. Each company will create and write-out a business plan as if a formal request to a banking institution.
  2. The Commercial project: Advertising is key to creating good business. Each group will film (or act out) a proposed commercial for their company.
  3. The Virtual Trade Mission: This project places the companies in the position of "International Development Manager" in an American company seeking to expand it's exports to the next big emerging market! Each company will virtually (theoretically) export a product to a foreign country!
  4.  The Founding Father Principles project: The project will help each group explore a "founding father" principle (the values that George Washington and John Adams championed) that support entrepreneurship in this country.
  5. Speech Contest: Two representatives from each company will get a chance to shine! Each person will have 3-5 minutes to give a well-developed speech on a specific topic with logical thoughts and arguments.
WOW! Seems overwhelming, huh?

The companies paired into two's and we played a really fun, get-to-know-you game called "Train-wreck!" A big group of people get into a big circle with one person in the middle who says their name and something unique or interesting about themselves. Any person in the outer circle who has the same interest runs to a different spot in the circle. If he or she doesn't get a another spot, they're in the middle! It's a great, fun way to get to know the other students in the program!

Before running to lunch, each company president went to the front of the room to make their business announcements! All week, the students are planning countless activities including an ice cream social, movie nights, volleyball tournaments, soccer tournaments, a scavenger hunt, and a photo booth!

The students watched a video called "We Still Hold These Truths" and you can watch the video too by clicking the link! This lead into our introduction of the Founding Fathers Principles project. Each company was assigned what we call a "founding principle." This includes property rights, free trade, constitutionalism, the 2nd amendment, equality of opportunity and freedom of religion. Of course, there is much, much more! But we only have 6 teams. This project is designed so that the students are teaching their own peers. The teams will come up with a skit, a song, something artistic and creative. Anything! Whatever it takes to get across the message about their founding principle and why it's important to the free enterprise system.

The FELC students loved the next game we played with our very own program director, Brian, called "Ask the Expert!" Brian invited our counselor, Zach, up onto the stage to be an "expert" in something. This week, Zach was a professional vocal coach for big name celebrities such as Katy Perry! He even gave us a few samples of his own vocal coaching exercises. The students analyzed Zach and his expertise in presentation and public speaking skills. Did he stare at his feet? Twiddle his thumbs? Hands in his pockets? Maintain good eye contact? All of these things are important to notice when it comes to giving a good speech! This lead into introducing the speech contest and the topic is "does capitalism encourage greed?"

Then, it was time for the first round of debates! Three students from each company stood on stage to present their point and rebuttle the opposing team on various topics. Some of the topics today included:

  • Should the Washington Redskins change their name due to racial insensitivity?
  • Should school administrations do away with the "valedictorian/salutatorian" system at graduation and move to a latin-based system (magna cum laude, etc.)?
  • Should citizens be allowed to carry a firearm on private properties, such as restaurants?
After dinner, the activities got going! Students spent a lot of time in the campus library working on scripts for their commercials, creating layouts for their business plans and writing drafts for their speeches.
This was the first night the students were actually selling their products and services! The entertainment companies hosted multiple movies, soccer games and volleyball games. The concession
groups were out selling candy, snacks, water, sodas, Gatorade, anything you can imagine! The style company worked on tye-dying t-shirts and decorating name tag lanyards while the publications team was selling picture DVD's and advertising their upcoming photo booth.
